The measurement of the impact of learning has traditionally been done against inputs. Some widely accepted measures include training spend per employee, number of training hours per person, number of completions and assessment scores. The desire to measure the outputs at the business end i.e increase in profitability, market share, increase in employee productivity has been hampered by lack of appropriate and robust direct measures or the lack of adequate resources, methodology and management attention.
We look at leading practices and talk to a panel with plenty of experience in the science and art of quantifying and communicating the value and impact of learning to the rest of the organisation. We explore the need for a more granular approach for different kinds of learning including Onboarding, Compliance, Leadership, Sales and training to support strategic initiatives.
- If and how are you measuring direct impact of results on bottom lines. On the flip side are you quantifying the adverse impact of lack of adequate training ? Do you have different treatment for compliance and non compliance learning ? Do your metrics include informal and unstructured learning? Is there a need or demand to measure this learning ?
- What process do you follow to identify and implement measures that are acceptable to senior managers and stakeholders? Do they value the metrics or is it a report that does not garner much attention ? A possible exception being compliance course completions by the board.
- Do you use “out of the box” approaches for the measurement and communication of impact of learning on business results if you are unable to find suitable metrics ?
- Do you use the balanced score card approach or do you tend to focus on the hard and quantifiable measures to win credibility ? Are you utilising the additional data generated by LMS and IT systems ? Is the learning data part of the corporate data warehouse and used by other functions ?
